If you are struggling to improve your Bible study then this article is for you. As believers, we are certain of the transforming power of the Word. But that doesn’t mean we don’t struggle sometimes. Don’t feel bad for struggling. It happens to the best of us. The good news is that there are simple tips to help you build a deeper relationship with God.
- Pray about it
I strongly believe there is nothing impossible with prayer. If prayer can heal the sick, I am certain it can also help us get to know God better. We just need to ask for His direction. Instead of diving into Bible study like any other textbook you have read, take some time to consult with God. Invite the Holy Spirit to demystify the passage or verse you are about to study. Ask for God’s interpretation, instead of leaning on your understanding.
- Use the right Bible
What Bible do you use for your Bible study? Since this is the primary tool you are using, it is advisable to use the right study Bible. This is not to say that any Bible translation or type is wrong. Absolutely not. But some translations are easier to comprehend, making them the best for Bible students. You don’t want to spend the entire time trying to grasp the concept. A simple and clear translation will be so much easier. Additionally, if you are using a Bible app, you need one that is easy to cross-reference and highlight. You will find this feature and many more in our Inductive Bible Study app.
- Follow the inductive Bible study method
To get the most out of your quiet time, you must learn the difference between reading the Bible and studying the Bible. That’s why I recommend the inductive Bible study method to both Bible students and Bible scholars. This Bible study method is divided into three steps; observation, interpretation, and application. The first step, observation, requires you to truly look deep into the word and ask questions. While interpretation helps you make sense of what you are reading most accurately. Lastly, you get to apply whatever you have learned to your life. By doing so, you will begin to see the Word of God as a living instruction (not some history book) and build a stronger connection with God. For a detailed guide, check out our Inductive Bible Study training webinar. I have also designed an app (the inductive Bible study app) that helps you seamlessly adopt this Bible study method into your daily quiet time.
- Get Bible study tools
In addition to a promising study Bible, you should learn to use vital Bible study tools such as Bible commentary, concordance, Bible dictionary, and Bible atlas. While the Bible is all-encompassing, these tools provide you with extra details that are necessary to get an accurate interpretation. Don’t exclude them from your study.
- Find the right time and place
Another reason why people struggle with their quiet time is the chosen time and place. We live in a busy and noisy world. A lot is going on at this very moment. This makes it imperative to find a place devoid of the distractions of your environment. Just as you go to the library to read, you need a quiet place for your Bible study. It could be a space in your home or office. But be sure to eliminate as many distractions as possible. If your phone is a distraction, don’t bring it with you.
Conclusion
Finally, don’t be in a hurry. This is a relationship. It involves two people communicating. Wait to hear from God too. Don’t be in a hurry to get out. I am positive these tips will make all the difference in your quiet time. Don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you need more assistance. God bless you!
